SIMLA SUNAY

Born in Istanbul in 1976, Simla Sunay was raised in various cities in Anatolia, the geographical and cultural heartland of Turkey. She started writing at an early age and, when she a 19-year-old student of architecture in Istanbul, she had five children’s books published. Her latest book, “Blonder than Sun, Sweeter than Honey“, is a children’s fantasy that has won critical acclaim in Turkey.

As well as writing stories, Simla reviews children’s books in a column, “Sunny library”, for a monthly book review, Remzi Book Gazette.

Simla works as an architect and as a freelance editor for an Istanbul architectural centre. Her architectural studies have been published in various journals.

Convinced that children can transcend and transform their world through their imaginations, Simla directs story-making workshops with children from a low income in suburb of Istanbul. As part of this, she is developing a project, ‘Children Plan Istanbul’, to foster civic-mindedness in the children of Istanbul.

Simla lives in the Çengelköy district of Istanbul with her husband and son.
